The Sherwood 12in Parallelogram Jointer

Sherwood’s 12in Parallelogram Jointer is optimised for fast, accurate jointing and flattening of timber boards with faces up to 300mm wide. The helical head, equipped with Tungsten Carbide inserts is driven by a heavy-duty 3HP induction motor, making light work of hard and dense timbers while leaving a flawlessly machined surface. The feed tables and fence are machined from solid pieces of cast iron, delivering superb and repeated accuracy with minimal setup.

Parallelogram Action

The tables on a traditional, wedge-bed style jointer move diagonally, meaning as the tables move down they get further away from the cutterhead. This increasing gap between table and cutterhead reduces cut quality.

By contrast, parallelogram tables move in an arc that matches the curvature of the head. As you change the cut depth, the distance between the table and the cutter head remains constant, delivering superior surface quality – even in deep cuts.

Powerful Motor, Reliable Drivetrain

The Sherwood 12in Parallelogram Jointer boasts a 3HP induction motor that is geared to produce an impressive 4500rpm at the cutterhead. A single wide poly-ribbed belt serves to transfer power from the motor to the head. These belts have longer service life and allow for the precision balanced alloy pulleys to be fitted – reducing inertia and delivering smoother, quieter operation.

Precision and Accuracy

Sherwood’s 12in Parallelogram Jointer delivers excellent and reliable accuracy. The beds and matching bedways are precision-machined multiple times over a number of days to allow the cast iron to settle and stabilize. Once assembled, the tables are again machined and polished over a period of days to achieve the same aim – so that each jointer bed has perfectly matched in-feed and out-feed tables. With a 2130mm length, this jointer will comfortably straighten work pieces up to 4.5m long.

The fence sits on a solid cast-iron bracket that is bolted to the main bed. The rack and pinion adjustment is easy to operate and adjust, and once locked in place is solid as a rock. The fence can be tilted up to 45° to plane bevelled edges, and has stops built in at 45° and 90° for quick and easy adjustment. 

Helical Cutterhead

Featuring 6 spirals and 78 Tungsten Carbide inserts, the head on the Sherwood 12in Parallelogram Jointer requires less power input, makes smaller chips and operates with far less noise and maintenance than traditional cutterheads. Each insert is lightly radiused and oriented at a shear angle to the angle of rotation, delivering a superior cut quality and excellent edge retention.

Expect to rotate the knives once for 8-10 blade changes on traditional straight HSS blades. And rotate it four times before ever replacing them. These knives will last up to 40 times longer than straight blade knives.

The cutterhead is supported by large Japanese SKF bearings, for smoother, quieter operation with lower friction – improving service life and performance.
